Birmingham 2022 hockey training facility completed ahead of Commonwealth Games

An £800,000 refit of a training facily for the 2022 Commonwealth Games has been completed.

The hockey facilities at Wyndley Leisure Centre near Birmingham have now finished, with the venue now accredited as an International Hockey Federation-standard pitch.

The Sutton Coldfield leisure centre was chosen as the official training facility for hockey, triathlon, and Para triathlon last November. Teams will be based there for training in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

Laura Unsworth said that the upgrade to the facility which paved the way for her to become GB’s most decorated hockey Olympian was an exciting time ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

“If it wasn’t for this place, I probably wouldn’t be stood here now having competed at multiple Commonwealth Games,” Unsworth said in November.

“For it to be upgraded is really exciting for Sutton Coldfield and the community.”

The Commonwealth Games at Birmingham 2022 will be staged at the University of Birmingham.
