Physical preparation for young hockey players 

Young hockey players need to develop a range of of technical and tactical skills to enhance overall development and performance. With that in mind, there are a range of boxes that need to be ‘ticked’ when approaching the preparation of a young hockey player. Henry Davies describes how to effectively balance them with a long term view in mind  

Things to consider 

There are some key factors to consider when designing an appropriate programme for young hockey players. These factors are (not limited to) the following: 

  • Age (biological vs chronological) 
  • Training history 
  • Movement competency
