East Grinstead will be the only club with both men’s and women’s sides at the Super 6s Championships finals later this month. But after such a riveting conclusion to the regular season and the players relishing the indoor scene, it has left many to ponder why the format is consigned to just two weekends.
Both East Grinstead teams qualified in style for England Hockey’s self-billed ‘Hockey’s Big Day In’ at the Copper Box, as the women’s top flight standings went down to the wire at both ends of the table on a thrilling final day at Repton Sports Centre.
Needing victory to qualify for the finals, Bowdon Hightown drew 3-3 with Wimbledon in the final match of the day. Wimbledon also needed a win to secure their place in the top flight but, leading 3-2 in the closing stages, a late Hannah Macdonald goal for Bowdon sealed their fate as Leicester stayed up.
