Meet hockey’s LX Club: Chasing tomorrow’s horizons with yesterday’s legs

The annual round-robin at the brand-new Worcester International Hockey Centre is a shining example to the rest of us, writes Oliver Morgan 

Two players greet each other warmly, embracing like long-lost friends.  “Frank, you’ve lost weight, mate.” Cue laughter. Groups of other similarly excited men are shaking hands, hugging, putting on shin pads. Sharing jokes while stretching off. The bonhomie is apparent and in good measure. 

Welcome to the LX Club, founded in 1993 by a group of players who were struggling to find high-quality fixtures in the over-60s age category. Now boasting over 400 members in the men’s section, the club is thriving, has a sizable management committee, regular events and a busy social calendar. 

With plenty of over-80s now also emerging, can any other sport match hockey’s Grand Masters scene? It would be hard pressed.

  1. My birth county, although cricket,not hockey was my game. I did play a bit of hockey at Redditch with Brian & Roger Self & others!
