Umpiring: Why the ‘old’ skills still matter in hockey

The domestic season is now well and truly under way and for umpires around the country, we no doubt prepared in a variety of ways. But how many of you were thinking about doing less, asks ANDY MAIR.

In this interactive world that we can now live in, online coverage of hockey is accessible, be it on: ‘pay to view’ platforms, EHF and FIH youtube channels, the terrestrial and EHLtv channels, or even recorded footage from your local club. How many of us ‘use’ this excellent resource in our preparation and development?

  1. That early advice Andy served you exceptionally well! I was lucky we had the likes of you, Hamish, Brooksy blowing when I was playing NL the rapport with players, the enjoyment on and off the pitch were special. I agree something has been lost.
