How to keep hockey goalkeepers engaged and recognised as team member

Goalkeepers are infamously named ‘crazy’ or told that they ‘have a screw loose’ but despite us being oddly wired we still have a desire to be part of the team, writes DAISY FORD

Obviously, goalkeepers‘ input into the team differs from the outfielders so we have contrasting needs, and our coaches should be aware of these.

In fact, I would encourage every coach to do one session in goalkeeping kit so that they have an idea of what it is like to be one of us. However, for those that haven’t, below are a few hints and tips to keep your goalkeepers happy, engaged and recognised as a team member.  

Playing Kit 

Appearance may seem insignificant in a hockey game but I beg to differ. If worn properly, playing kit can be a sign of team spirit and unity which looks threatening and intimidating to the opponent.
