It’s not just about football players and the bigger college sports. US star Erin Matson has become one of the first field hockey players to take advantage of the landmark ruling which now allows college athletes to be paid rather than remain amateur.
In July, the Supreme Court ruled against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) which meant that college athletes were now able to be compensated for name, image and likeness.
Athletes with a social media presence or with a high personal branding and story messaging can now get paid while foreign students can potentially fund their time in the US.
