Hockey can break new ground with Rhys Smith’s Inner City drive

Ahead of the 2021/22 season, we are celebrating club hockey by reproducing some of our best print archive online

He’s popped up on social media channels with humorous trick videos such as ‘Dislocated knee’ and ‘Squeeze & Pop’. But Rhys Smith was finally able to demonstrate his skills on the field when he made his Great Britain debut in 2019.

Smith, 24, was called up to the GB men’s squad to face Spain and ended the year a few months into a new side project as the face behind Hockey Inner City, a non-profit which aims to make the sport more accessible to young children.

In 2018 he was also experiencing the highs and lows of England’s lengthy campaign in India during the World Cup. There, he was still a social media presence, a natural on the camera when visiting a children’s programme in Bhubaneswar and then dancing on stage at the Kalinga Stadium fanzone.
