Helen Richardson-Walsh expresses shock at Hockey 5s World Cup venue

Rio gold medallist Helen Richardson-Walsh has expressed her shock at the staging of the first Hockey 5s World Cup in Oman.

There was widespread condemnation after it was announced that Oman had beaten rival bids to host the January 2024 event, which will feature 16 teams per gender and three nations from each continent.

Helen’s wife, Kate Richardson-Walsh, resigned from world hockey’s athletes committee on last month in the aftermath of the decision after writing a scathing social media post aimed at the International Hockey Federation (FIH)’s “incomprehensible” decision “to award tournaments to countries where being LGBTQ+ is illegal.”
