The 18 Oranje players danced a jig on the outfield as the Netherlands won their 11th title in 15 EuroHockey Championships. With the full squad quota on the outfield, that’s how it must feel to their opposition during another tournament blitz, as one of sport’s greatest ever men’s or women’s teams continued their trophy-hogging tyranny.
But they were pushed all the way to the title after a dogged German display as they searched for a first EuroHockey triumph in eight years. They were unlucky not to score too, a 2-0 defeat not painting the full picture, but after this marvellous Championships, the 2023 event in Monchengladbach can’t come soon enough when Germany hope to exact revenge, possibly without revered coach Alyson Annan at the helm of the Oranje.
