Mohali hockey stadium renamed after Balbir Singh

The Mohali International Hockey stadium has been renamed in memory of Balbir Singh Sr.

The name change came at a ceremony to mark the first anniversary passing of the Indian great and three-time Olympic winner.

Balbir’s five goals in India’s 6–1 victory over Holland in the 1952 Olympic final remains a record today.

Singh, who died aged 96 in 2020, was also a member of the 1948 London Olympic gold medal-winning team.

He had started his career as a goalkeeper before moving up field to become of the great attackers in the game.

The blue turf Mohali stadium was opened in September 2013 and has a 15,000 capacity.
