Women’s London Cup to offer competitive hockey format

The Y1 women’s London Cup will kick off this weekend, featuring eight teams from the south going head-to-head.

Wimbledon, Barnes, Surbiton, Southgate, Hampstead & Westminster, Reading, London Wayfarers and Sevenoaks will compete against each other on a home and away basis every weekend until June’s finals.

The London Cup means that there will be top level men’s and women’s action following the decision by England Hockey to end the domestic season.

The Y1 men’s Championship also starts this weekend, with the finals held at Southgate in May. The women’s league finals will be held in early June at Surbiton HC.

Omar Shibli, Barnes coach, said clubs expressed a desire to continue meaningful hockey at a time when the season would be concluding.

He said: “After such a long time without sport this is a great chance to support the players with a great competitive spring-summer format.

“We also want to increase the profile and media around club hockey, with pre and post game social media, plus game highlights after each round and a live-streamed finals day.

“We hope to welcome fans once it is safe to do so in accordance with government guidelines and create some genuine fan experiences, open to all to enjoy at a time when little hockey is being played.”
