Social media was awash with comment as the fall out from Ireland’s defeat to Canada continued into Monday Here is a round-up as Canada secured a place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games
The FIH responded on Monday to Irish media requests on the incident which has got everyone talking, the video umpire decision to award Canada a final second penalty stroke.
“Umpires’ decisions are final and, as a general principle, FIH does not comment publicly on individual umpiring decisions.”
These are YOUR rules @FIH_Hockey – be nice if your umpires referred to them rather than pulling decisions out of the air! Neither “on pitch” umpires, with clear views saw anything wrong and the man with the camera 🎥 angles “sees” a deliberate foul denying a 🥅???????? https://t.co/k6PUw6b94b

That is a complete and utter disgrace! @FIH_Hockey
Time+time again we see umpires hiding behind "no clear reason 2 change ur decision" then we see this idiot magic a stroke from somethin that definitely isn't clear! An apology from the umpire in the bar wont be enough this time!— Michael Watt (@mikiewatt) October 27, 2019

It’s now time for the @FIH_Hockey to step up and explain what has happened here. Hockey is known for being a progressive sport but if this isn’t addressed it’s a big step backwards. Sport can be cruel but the technology was there to make the right call.

Haven’t seen PS decision vs @IreMenHockey that allow @FieldHockeyCan to go for Tokyo but there is so much noise going on, that seems to be a very polemic one. There are mistakes and accidents in every match why not in one of that magnitude? Honesly sorry for Ireland though..

Sport can be cruel. Really feeling for @IreMenHockey @irishhockey and just can’t believe the way the game finished. This group have been through a lot in the last year or so and they deserved so much more. Still a mighty effort this weekend 🇮🇪💚🏑

Olympic dreams crushed, much needed funding and a massive opportunity to grow our sport lost. The enormous sacrifices that all the @IreMenHockey have made for years totally disregarded by an official who has sacrificed what exactly? Sport is cruel but that’s scandalous..

@samhockeygold sorry for Ireland but I think the decision must have been that it was an intentional foul on the player in possession of ball so that’s a PS. Don’t know why they sat back when 3 up

🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ Wow Wee!! Got me shaking my head! Those @irishhockey blokes will be guttered for some time for what I feel once again a shocking decision by the third umpire!PC if any contact was made.Shame to end it in that way. 3 game home & away if you’re doing it like this @FIH_Hockey https://t.co/LGXNR4N4Pt

I literally have no words…at least none I can post on a public forum @IreMenHockey
I will say this…these decisions have consequences for players and coaches and funding etc they should also have consequences for the officials who make them @hookhockey @irishhockey
