What a way to the start the 2019/20 season. Surbiton, bidding to reclaim the title from Hampstead & Westminster, put Reading to the sword with a huge 10-1 win on Saturday in the Men’s Premier Division opener.
Surbiton have racked up some big wins in recent seasons but never a 10-goal haul, while Reading’s defeat overhauled their 9-1 loss to Sevenoaks in 2015.
There were hat-tricks from Ben Boon and Luke Taylor as Surbiton, 3-1 up at half-time, put in a second-half goal blitz with seven goals against the hosts.
Boon and Taylor completed hat-tricks while goals came from Rob Farrington (2), Alan Forsyth and Arjan Drayton-Chana. Andrew Oxburgh was Reading’s sole scorer.
The goals continued at Old Georgians, who must be favourites already to reach the play-offs alongside Surbiton.
Old Georgians scored five at home against University of Exeter in their first season in the top flight after the Conference.
Tom Carson and James Tindall scored two each for the hosts, while Exeter’s only goal came from Tom Brooks.
Holcombe also put on a five star show in a more evenly-matched clash against East Grinstead which saw Barry Middleton score on his return to the club.
Defending champions Hampstead & Westminster – who were the last team to notch 10 goals when they beat Sevenoaks 10-2 last year – were 4-3 winners at Beeston with Matt Guise-Brown scoring a hat-trick, while Wimbledon beat Brooklands MU 3-1 on the road.
