South Africa men qualify for hockey World Cup

nid%3D3452%7Ctitle%3D%7Cdesc%3D%7Clink%3DnoneThe final place at the 2014 hockey World Cup has been decided. South Africa men will make the trip to the Hague, May 31 – June 15, 2014 after defeating Egypt 2-0 in the Africa Cup, today in Nairobi, Kenya.

Golas from Julian Hykes and Clint Panther saw the favourites home in the final.

Skipper Austin Smith, who was also voted player of the tournament, said: “I am elated that we have qualified for next year’s World Cup. A a lot of people think it’s easy for us to win the Africa title but it is never the case .

“There are what we call so many thunderbolts and curve balls – the surface was incredibly difficult. I am very proud of the guys’ discipline, and today the direct physical challenge meant I am just grateful none of my players were seriously injured. Our management deserve congratulations too.”

Elizabeth Opoku of Ghana was the women’s player of the tournament.
