Investec World League Semi-final London – finals day

Argentina secure third

Argentina 3 China 2

Las Leonas will be at the 2014 World Cup thanks to a last-minute goal from Carla Rebecchi. It wasn’t great goalkeeping but was enough in a game where Argentina were never behind.

After a goal-less first half, Rebecchi produced a decent corner flick after 41 mins. China equalised with a Li Hongxia deflection also from a corner.

Luciana Aymar put Argentina in front with a diving sweep high into the net before a drilled shot from Liang Meiyu in the 65th minute set up Rebecchi’s heroics.

South Africa paper over the cracks

South Africa 3 Spain 2

[img_assist|nid=8326|title=|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=94|height=100]Sport is a results-based business, when you win. So at least South Africa can take one result away from their miserable effort to finish seventh in London.

They will still almost certainly qualify for the World Cup with the Afica Cup still to come.  So that is all OK.

Spain set the game going with a tidy, squeezed finish from the chunky Maria Romagosa. But two goals from Lilian du Plessis and one for Kelly Madsen gave the Africans a comfortable half-time lead,

A mixed second-half ensued with Spain’s  Maria Zubiria producing some excellent saves in the Spain goal.

Anabel Flores Conde then dug a nice shot over Vuyisanani Mangisa to set up a tight finish – before misssing an open goal with 15 seconds to go to at least spare South Africa another shootout.
