Australia out-ran England to produce a comprehensive 3-0 win in the final of the Investec World League Round Three tournament in Chiswick on Sunday.

The warning bells were ringing in the 12th minute when Ashleigh Nelson finished from close in, after one of many circle penetrations around the back of the defence.

England contnually struggled to break out of their own half and the building pressure produced open-play goals from Kellie White (23 mins) and Emily Smith (60). Although player of the tournament, goalkeeper Maddie Hinch kept the scoreline respectable.

England coach Jason Lee was upbeat about his new charges’ performances over the week-long tournament in which England secured a place in the 2014 World Cup in the Hague.

Lee said: It has been a fantastic week for us. Coming into the tournament we were more worried about World Cup qualification than how we would go in the final.

“Today we were just out-run. We knew one of our challenges coming into the tournament is that we are just not that fit compared to our normal standards.”
