Brooklands look to upset Beeston bandwagon

[img_assist|nid=6498|title=|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=100|height=96]MANCHESTER, November 8 – With victories over Reading and East Grinstead already under their belts this season, it is the turn of Brooklands Manchester University to play host to runaway leaders Beeston in the England men’s hockey league premier division on Saturday.

Despite lying eighth in the table with just those two wins so far this term, the Manchester side will be aiming to stifle a Beeston attack which has scored more than five goals a game in league matches so far.

“We’re always up for the big games,” said Brooklands Manager Neil Flanagan. “But we seem to struggle against the other teams so it‘s been a frustrating start to the season.

“We’ve had a couple of quite bad injuries to top scorer David Seddon and Scottish international Russell Anderson that have upset the apple cart before the start of the season.

“We have a strong young side and they are quality players but we lack a bit of experience. But they’re getting better all the time.”

Meanwhile, second-placed Canterbury go to strugglers Southgate, while third-placed Cannock will be aiming to catch the top two with a home game against East Grinstead.

Hampstead and Westminster host Surbiton and Reading entertain Loughborough Students in the other premier division matches.

The top two in the conference north, leaders Bowdon travel to second-placed Sheffield Hallam knowing that they must win or draw if they want to preserve top spot.

Meanwhile, third-placed University of Durham travel to fourth-placed Belper.

After moving up to second place with a win over Whitchurch a fortnight ago, University of Exeter could go top of the conference west if they can beat Havant and leaders Cardiff and UWIC lose out at Guildford.

After climbing to third on the back of their win at Richmond last Sunday, Bromley and Beckenham face league leaders Wimbledon in the conference east this Sunday.

Meanwhile, second-placed Holcombe entertain Richmond this weekend.
