[img_assist|nid=6187|title=|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=100|height=100]LONDON, October 26 – Beeston kept their perfect start to their England men’s hockey league premier division season going yet another week with their sixth win in six games against struggling Southgate on Saturday.
But the team who sit second from bottom were no pushover and Beeston had to work hard to take all three points.
Ben Arnold put them into the lead after 22 minutes and Adam Dixon stretched the advantage on 40 minutes.
Simon Bird fired home in the 54th minute to set up a tense finale to the game but Beeston held on to keep their winning streak alive.
Cannock made it four wins out of seven to stay in third spot with a 4-0 trouncing of Hampstead & Westminster.
Goals from Daniel Coultas, Thomas Morris and Martin Ebbage gave them a three-goal lead by half time and then Coultas’ second eight minutes from time killed the game off.
In the only other premier division fixture of the day, Loughborough Students emerged victors of a thrilling 5-2 encounter with Brooklands MU and the result sees them climb to fourth.
Simon Faulkner and Sam Ward both hit braces and Andrew Bull also got on the score sheet for Loughborough. For Brooklands, Sam French and Peter Flanagan were on target.
In the conference north, Sheffield Hallam failed to capitalise on a rare slip-up by Bowdon as they lost to Preston.
Bowdon could only manage a 1-1 draw away to University of Durham after the start was delayed due to snow.
That meant that if Sheffield could win, they would be the new leaders of the league. But Preston won 3-2 – a result that sees them climb out of the relegation zone.
However, the conference west did get a new leader as Cardiff & UWIC beat Cheltenham 1-0 to go top.
University of Exeter climbed to second and Team Bath Buccaneers dropped to third as they could only muster a 1-1 draw with Guildford.
Leaders Wimbledon continued their good form in the conference east with a 3-1 win over hosts Old Loughtonians, Ben Hawes scoring twice to add to an early own goal conceded by the home side.
Meanwhile, Holcombe won 2-1 in the other late match in the conference east.
