Surbiton lead Investec Women’s Hockey League

[img_assist|nid=6127|title=|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=220|height=167]ENGLAND, September 15 – Newly promoted Surbiton emerged as the early leaders of the Investec Women’s Premier Division after dishing out a 4-0 defeat to Reading on the opening day of the season on Saturday.

Sarah Page gave Surbiton the lead after just two minutes as she smashed home from open play. Surbiton had to wait a long time for their second but it came on 53 minutes as Chloe Strong latched onto a penalty corner.

Reading capitulated somewhat after that and Natalie Bell dispatched a penalty stroke two minutes from the end after the referee spotted a deliberate foul in front of goal. Surbiton’s perfect start was completed in the final minute as Bethan Jenkins hit a fourth from a penalty corner.

A double from Liz Sinton saw Clifton triumph 3-1 over Slough. Jo Leigh opened Clifton’s account for the new season on 22 minutes and although Amy Sheehan got Slough back into the game on 52 minutes, Sinton’s braced claimed the victory.

Sutton Coldfield won their Midlands derby beating University of Birmingham 2-0. Jane Sixsmith opened the scoring on 15 minutes before Jen Parkinson expertly guided a penalty stroke low and wide of the Birmingham keeper.

Canterbury beat Bowdon Hightown 2-1 with an own goal winning it. Sarah Kerly hit a shot from outside the circle which deflected in off a defender. Mel Clewlow scored their first goal.

Leicester also won 2-1 as goals from Kim Hicklin and Hannah Smith cancelled out Emma McCabe’s penalty corner strike.
