The Hockeyroos turned around their poor performance from yesterday with a 5-0 drubbing of world number eight hockey side Korea at Shenton Park, Perth this evening.
Australia’s coach Adam Commens said “it was a much improved performance on yesterday. We created a lot of chances today and the result was justified.”
The match began at a frantic pace with the Hockeyroos attempting to undo their poor showing in yesterday’s 4-2 first-test loss. Casey Eastham hit a field goal for the home side in the fifth minute of the match, coming from a brilliant cross from young gun Emily Smith.Megan Rivers and Georgia Nanscawen both played key offensive roles in the first half, proving a handful for the Korean defenders. The forward pressure forced a second goal for the Hockeyroos through Georgie Parker in the 35th minute.
Hockeyroos defenders Anna Flanagan and Kobie McGurk combined well in the back, repelling a number of solid attacks from Korea.
Commens said: “Defensively we provided ourselves with a far better platform to springboard our attack.”
Eastham continued her excellent 2012 form with a second goal in the 48th minute. The floodgates opened for the Hockeyroos only minutes later when Emily Smith converted a field goal in the 51st minute and Fiona Boyce capitalised on a loose ball in the 56th minute.
Australia A again proved too strong for Korean Club team, Korea Telecom in the curtain raiser at Shenton Park. The 3-1 victory to Australia A indicates the great depth of the women’s program. Hockeyroos National Squad player Emily Hurtz snared a double in the first half and 2011 Hockeyroos National squad player Holly Webster scoring the third goal late in the match.
A rest day tomorrow allows the players to freshen up and prepare for Friday night’s match at Perth Hockey Stadium at 6pm.
