A 2-0 win for England over Australia in the fifth/sixth place playoff game has secured a Champions Trophy place for Great Britain in Argentina in 2012.
That tournament has already been written in as vital Olympic preparation by all the top sides so relegation, and hoping for the posibility of an FIH nomination for the Rosario tournament, would not have been a great outcome from the 2011 Champions Trophy campaign.
England started the game well, taking the lead inside 10 minutes after Helen Richardson took a quick self-pass then found Anna Bennett on the right side of goal. She passed across goal leaving Rebecca Herbert to tap into an empty net.
England, however, lost control of the second half. A PC deflected in by Chloe Rogers after a Laura Unsworth shot helped, but England once again had to rely on goalkeeper Beth Storry to make a string of excellent saves to keep the game safe.
“In the first half we controlled the game and let Australia run themselves out, ” said coach Danny Kerry. “Second half, despite the half time team talk being about momentum and energy and not letting Australia back into the game, that is exactly what we did and Australia were unfortunate not to get a goal.
“Beth made some very important saves and kept us in the game second half. She showed why she is one of the best keepers in the world,” he said.
