Southgate and Exeter University will return to the England Hockey League premier division next season after taking the top two places in a close promotion tournament at Cannock.
Exeter (+4 goal difference), Southgate (2) and Durham University (0) all finished the tournament with two wins. But northern conference winners Durham lost out on goal difference on a nailbiting final afternoon.
Meanwhile, Canterbury, who finished ninth in the premier division will be back in the regional conferences after failing to gain a point in the over the May Day bank holiday weekend.
Both promoted sides have recent premier league experience. Exeter University were relegated last year after one season in the top flight. Southgate were relegated from the premier in 2009, again after one season in the top division.
