South Africa failed to score in the bronze medal game despite a number of penalty corner chances.
Twigg, who turned in a pass fron Leicester’s Crista Cullen, told the Telegraph: “I am absolutely thrilled.
“They fought hard but we were solid in our defence. We are pleased to come away with the bronze in the end.
“It was disappointing to lose the semi-final (against Australia) but we had to move on and focus on winning today’s game. We knew we would have to work hard for it in this heat. We now know how hard we can push ourselves.”
Proud of her team for putting Monday’s disappontment behind them, England captain Kate Walsh said: “Fortunately, we are quite experienced at doing that this season. We’ve had to pick ourselves up a few times.”
