Hockeyroos shatter England’s golden dreams

Australia won the first women’s hockey Commonwealth Games semi-final with an assured second-half performance against England.
The Hockeyroos took the lead early in the second half when Madonna Blyth deflected in a corner. This followed a first period when England dominated the game but failed to convert possession into goals.
Australia began the second half a team transformed, emerging into the sunshine of the Dhyan Chand Stadium ready to turn the screws on England. After the goal, the Hockeyroos defended superbly and attacked well at times.

Their win was well deserved and you have to admire the physical conditioning that enabled them to chase the ball so hard in the first half, then make England chase it so much in the second – especially with a bench depleted by an injury to Emily Hurtz and the presence of a reserve goalie.
