Leicester have taken top place in the English national hockey league despite dropping two points at Midlands rivals Cannock. Birmingham University’s loss to Canterbury puts them in third place with the Kent club leapfrogging the students into second.
At the bottom of the table, Reading’s woes continued with a loss at Olton and West Warwicks. With many of Reading’s international stars on Commonwealth Games duty, the experience of Lucilla Parkes and Rachel Clift helped the Midlanders leapfrog Reading in the battle of the bottom two.
Goals by Clift and Holly Chipman gave Olton a 2-0 half-time lead. Sam Quek hit back for the visitors before Denise Marston-Smith restored the two goal cushion
Quek added a late corner goal in the 69th minute.
The win propelled Olton and West Warwicks into eighth place, Brooklands Poynton are ninth and Reading remain bottom of the table.
