Wales’ women hockey players meet New Zealand in the opening fixture at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Monday, before contests with England, Malaysia and Canada.
But they face a tough task to qualify through to the medal rounds admits Sarah Thomas a veteran on GB’s 2008 Beijing Olympic squad.“It’s obviously going to be difficult but we’re going to give any team a run for their money,” Thomas told the Chester Chronicle.
“We’re playing some of the top nations – we’ve got England and New Zealand in our first two games, so that’s going to be a tough start for us.
“But wearing a Welsh jersey is something really, really special – something as a child you want to do.
“Some of these players I’ve played with since I was 13, 14 years old, so the bond is really there.
“It’s really, really special to go out there and play for Wales.
“Fingers crossed come Monday we can show what we’ve been working on.”
