Blues are in need of a boost as they have taken only one point from their opening two games, both at home.
Their performance last Saturday, when losing 3-2 to Loughborough Students after conceding two goals in the last 10 minutes, was an improvement on the previous week’s goalless draw with Bowdon, but Barnes knows his men will have to raise their game even further tomorrow.
Chris Newman could also return to the Reading side after missing the opening two games through injury, but fellow striker Jon Codling remains on the sidelines.
Reading, however, will be without skipper Rhys Joyce, as he is attending a wedding tomorrow.
The Welshman is also nursing a rib injury, which forced him off last Saturday, and will face a fitness test before the National Cup tie at Conference East side St Albans on Sunday.
